Al Jazeera: “Israel had always had active spies in Kurdish areas of Iran, Syria and Iraq, running covert operations that jeopardize the security of the entire region, according to a report in the New Yorker magazine released in July.

That article was written by Seymour Hersh, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who uncovered Abu Ghraib scandal. The article?s primary source is an unnamed former and current intelligence officials in Israel, the United States and Turkey.

According to Hersh, Israel wants to boost the Kurdish military in order to offset the strength of the Shiite Muslims, and thus form a base in Iraq from which it can spy on Iran.

‘Israel has always supported the Kurds in a Machiavellian way – a balance against Saddam,’ said a former Israeli intelligence officer. ‘It’s Realpolitik. By aligning with the Kurds Israel gains eyes and ears in Iran, Iraq and Syria. ‘

‘What will the behaviour of Iran be if there is an independent Kurdistan with close ties to Israel? Iran does not want an Israeli land-based aircraft carrier on its border.'”
